My Reading Class

My current Reading class is a fantastic group of students! I am really excited to be working with them and am really looking forward to some of the things we will be doing. The crux of my Reading class is the combination of Silent Reading with tri-weekly Reading Response Journals. Students will learn to answer questions about what they are reading in the areas of summarizing, making connections, predicting, inferring, vocabulary, and evaluating. My eventual goal is to teach my students to self-question as they read about a variety of aspects of their literature.

We are going to be reading Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll starting this week. These books are absolutely fantastic and I am especially looking forward to teaching these little rascals how to play chess. Most peope have seen the Disney adaptation and thus never feel inclined to read Carroll's works ... quite a mistake!

At the moment, we are also reading American folktales about Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill. We have previously looked at a Greek myth, that of Icarus's "fall from grace", and read a poem that connects with it.

I know that this blog is intended for book recommendations and I promise to get back to that. I just had to take a moment to write about what's going on in my Reading class.

By the way ... I'm looking for recommendations in the area of mythology, legends, or folktales.
